Compare that to buying new speakers outright, and how much of a premium you would pay a such, or if it's worth your hassle repairing them yourself if you can get the replacement parts.

My question to you is, why don't you simply buy proper 5.1 surrounds/sub for your Onkyo(?)

You have to weigh the marginal improvement in sound with only the fronts vs the cost/hassle in repairing used speakers. I don't see you making the (all around) jump to audiophile equipment here, so it's a really slim performance gain IMO.

Fix them, you can repair the woofer or find a replacement.... Easy enough to do yourself. You should a major difference between the Kappa's and the other speakers. No they are not the 9's, but still a high quality speaker. This was the hay day of Infinity, they never made another speaker that would compare to the Kappas, unfortunately. All that I know about Altec-Lansing, is they specialize in computer speakers and have for years. I've never heard any of their regular speakers. I would say the choice is obvious. Those speakers will be comparable to a paradigm monitor 5 or 7. As far as power goes, if you are pushing at least 100 watts per channel, you should be alright. If it were any of the other higher Kappa's, I would say you need more but you should be fine.... If not sell them on Ebay, I would buy them in a heartbeat for backups....
