Do I need a DVD recorder with a built in digital tuner?

I am trying to record programs from my Directv DVR to a DVD. I havent purchased a DVD recorder because I feel that I am getting the run around and nobody seems to know how to answer this. Can I just purchase a DVD recorder or do I have to have one with a built in digital tuner? Thanks in advance for any help!

The directtv content is copy protected. No tuner is needed but the content may not be allowed to be copied out.

It's a common question and you make me wonder why they didn't just answer with no or tell you more.

And no, it should not be HD quality. That stuff is protected.

Thank you for your quick response! I went to Best Buy and the guy there told me that I needed one with a digital tuner. But when I had done my research online no one had mentioned that I would need one. So, I went to Fry's thinking that someone there would know if I needed it or not and they couldn't give me an answer either way. They actually tried selling me a Dazzle! Thanks again for your help!

The help in some stores is as good as no help at times.

I'm not saying you can't record anything at all but if it does work, it will be SD (standard definition) since all the HD stuff is protected in many ways.

So, I have some programs recorded because my daughter is in some commercials on them and I want to put them on DVD incase something happens to my dvr. Which seems like it may happen sooner that later becuase it is really slowing down lately. Is it possible that I may not be able to transfer them to DVD if they are in HD or copywright protected? I really appreciate your help!

So far no DVD recorder I've seen records in HD. And the connections I see above are not HD. But it doesn't mean you can't save them in SD.

I am guessing you want to know ahead of time what the result will be.
