I agreed it's not Netflix's fault. It's either the TV or the ZVOX or both its setup. Sorry, but don't know enough about either to give you suggestions.

I can't guess how you set it up but a common sound bar is often STEREO only and if we send it 5.1, Dolby or other than stereo it will be silent.

I spoke with Samsung and they told me the following:
- They tried to find the place in Netflix that would change the audio from 5.1 to stereo and they were unable to find it.
- Spoke with Level 2 and he "informed" me that both Netflix and HBO Go had released new versions of the applications and they each missed code in the apps to push sound to external devices. He said Samsung does not engineer the apps in any way.
- They took down my firmware, smarthub, and netflix versions and documented my issue to pass along to the developers to get this changed in the next release.

So here are my questions:
1. How in the world would 2 different companies release 2 different apps at the same time that are both missing the same code to push sound to external devices?
2. How does Samsung, who claims they have nothing to do with the application development process, take these new apps from 3rd parties and just put them on their tv without testing them first to see if they worked?
3. How does Netflix and HBO get away without testing and finding this obvious problem as well?

Samsung and other companies have adapted the concept of a PLATFORM and have invited others to put APPs on their hardware. Samsung and others have done a poor job of explaining the new system where buggy apps can exist and Samsung can't fix it.

I hope this helps you understand how they got to this point.

CONSUMERS however don't care about this. They'll ask questions just like yours and here's where the power of the CONSUMER comes into play. Ready?

We aren't talking about the Apple App store or the Android Market where it is a lot larger with more end user apps than corporate apps. We are talking about a much smaller experience with 2 major apps. They are probably 2 of the 3 biggest for a TV besides Hulu. How can both of them at the SAME time be doing the same thing? I work in IT for a living. I understand how to troubleshoot things and how apps and hardware work together while understanding who is responsible for what. There is to much coincidence for both apps from different companies behaving the same way.

We are seeing Netflix (for example) underperform (the BLINK issue) and then not present titles that you find on another device.

It's busted. We know it. How to fix it seems to be by returning the products that have the defective apps.

The digital inputs of the ZVOX 220 do not have a Dolby Labs license. If you get audio from the TV and not through the ZVOX 220 when connected to the Samsung via optical digital audio, it probably because the audio is only "Dolby Digital". The simplest solution is to connect the ZVOX to your Samsung TV's stereo analog audio output. It is a 3/8" stereo minijack connector on the back of your Samsung UN46D7000LF TV, next to the "Ex-link" jack. You need a stereo miniplug to Left/Right phono plug cable, which would connect to analog audio input 1 on the ZVOX 220. This will solve any "no sound" issues from the ZVOX 220.
This will sound the same as the digital audio output. In the case of the digital audio, we immediately decode the digital audio into stereo analog audio inside the ZVOX 220. If you connect from the Samsung's stereo minijack analog audio output, the Samsung does the digital to analog conversion. I'm sure the Samsung's digital decoder is the equivalent of what we use inside the ZVOX Audio 220.
The main difference is that the Samsung TV has a license to decode all the proprietary digital audio streams from Dolby, so you will get audio from all video sources on the TV.
I don't think your Samsung TV has the provision to convert all digital audio out into PCM, which is why this isn't working. Just use the analog audio output. From Fred at ZVOX Audio www.zvoxaudio.com

Hi Fred,

I am having the same problem with my Samsung 55" 3-D LED TV. So, what you are saying is that the simple work-around is to connect the RCA (white & red) jacks from the external speakers to the TV, correct? Are you also saying the sound quality on the analog vs. the digital is the same? I was under the impression that digital produced a better quality sound than analog. Am I incorrect? Also, why is it that other APPS on the Samsung "Smart" TV play just fine with the digital audio connection, i.e., BBCNews, etc.... but just a couple of APPS like NETFLIX do not? My problem with the TV manufacturers is that they want to list all these incredible improvements but the consumer is left to themselves to determine which combinations will work properly. Okay, so I want to watch TV so the digital audio cable will work with that. No, I want to watch Netflix, so I have to make sure the analog cable is connected. Oh, but now I want to watch BBCNews, my digital audio will work with that. How can the manufacturers expect the consumer to be juggling different audio cable connections between APPS? This is simply ridiculous!!!

Same problem

I have the same problem with my 55in Samsung when using netflix through the smart hub. When on netlflix i lose sound to the soundbar(Vizio). This used to work for a time,but one day it just wouldn't play audio through the soundbar. I now have to use the internal speakers when on netflix which contradicts why i even bought the soundbar/subwoofer in the first place.

Audio output of Samsung

Hello scottpyper,
If you connect the ZVOX 220 to the analog audio output of the Samsung TV and leave it there, you get great sound and will not have to switch inputs. .
The problem is that the "no sound" programs are usng "Dolby Digital" while the "sound" programs are using PCM digital audio. ZVOX Audio does not have "Dolby Digital" licensed circuits in the 220, 320 and 420. The license fee is prohibitive for a small manufacturer selling speakers below $400.

The sound is digital until it gets to the TV. Your TV's Dolby Digital decoder converts to analog.
If we had a Dolby Digital decoder, we would have made exactly the same conversion inside the 220, 320 and 420. Your speaker is entirely analog after the input conversion. There is no audible difference in the two connection methods. All the advantage of digital occurs in the tranmission of the sound to your TV set. The 3-4 foot analog cable from the TV vs the optical cable makes no audible difference.

Just be sure to connect the Samsung's analog audio output, not an input. On most recent Samsung TVs, that is a fixed level stereo minijack.

I'm sorry for the confusion, but the assumption that sending digital from the TV to the ZVOX is better than sending analog is not correct. The speakers are analog inside.
