Can I use good quality speaker wire as audio out

I ran good quality speaker wire in the wall from a second floor bedroom computer to my stereo audio receiver directly below in the living room. (about 15-20 feet). I soldered rca connectors and tried it out. The result was very low volume with significant noise. A local home theater installer told me that I should not have used speaker cable as it is not shielded. Is that correct or do I have some other problem?

re-read your post and the install is correct...especially true as far as noise is concert but the low volume maybe a different issue. The distance or wire size maybe the problem.

cable was a 14 gage speaker wire with rca connectors soldered. I'm suspicious of the solder connection as my skill level is not high.

From the audio out on the computer to the cd in jacks on my receiver.
When that didn't work I hooked up a cd player upstairs to the receiver downstairs with the same results.

the distance is too great for the amount of power the computer/cd drive to generate. Looks like you might need a different ways to accomplish what you want. Good luck.
