Pioneer VSX-1021 - Airplay (HMG) is silent, why?

I have a VSX-1021. It's hooked into my network and the Mac and my iPhone can see it using Airplay. I have the auto-power-up option turned on so that I can select it using iTunes (or on my iPhone using the Music app) and it automatically starts up and starts playing.

When I start playing using Airplay, the TV shows that the receiver is recognizing the iPhone or iTunes source (depending on which one I use to stream to the receiver), but I get no audio. The music is playing, with the seconds ticking down on screen and with album art, but no audio. I'm not muted, and the volume is turned up.

The receiver works perfectly with my DirecTV hooked up on Video1. It's just the HMG setting that is freaking out.

Any ideas?

Make sure your firmware is up to date on the receiver too.

Just got the VSX-1021-K and love the receiver. I noticed this problem almost immediately and am glad I'm not alone. I was thinking I might have gotten a dud and was dreading boxing the receiver up and shipping it off to be repaired. In my case, the problem of having no sound through the receiver with AirPlay has happened once a day since I got the receiver a week ago. As others have said, album art shows up on the TV, the track name shows up on the receiver display, and all indications from the phone are that it's sending the audio to the receiver but the receiver just isn't outputting the audio.

I've found that if I switch the receiver to a different input and then start streaming via AirPlay again (which re-activates HMG) the audio from my or my wife's iPhone 4 handsets will play through the receiver again. Try switching inputs and then starting to stream audio from your iOS device again and see if it works for you.

With that said, I love the feature set of the receiver and will gladly put up with this minor annoyance so long as it's not indicative of a more serious problem with the guts of the receiver. Time will tell, I guess. For now, I'll hope that the issue can be fixed with another firmware update in the future.

Same problem also, VSX-921 silent

I have talked with Pioneer support about this issue, they said that it could be that Apple has some problem with the Airplay protocoll that will be corrected in the next IOS and iTunes update. I do not know if that is the case but they (Pioneer support) are trying to recreate the problem themselves to see if the problem is on their side.

If I switch to another input the problem goes away as Adam said earlier. For me the problem occurs rather often.

I, too, am having the same problem. When I switch the receive to a different input then try airplay again (from itunes, ipad, or iphone) it will work. I doubt an itunes update will fix the issue. I'd sit on the phone with Pioneer for an hour to let them know the issue, but I just don't have that kind of time.

This seems to be a common issue, this problem crops up only when I try to do the auto power up by trying to play a song from my iphone when the receiver is on standby.
The HMG tuns on and the song title shows up in the display but no volume.
But this problem goes away if I switch off the main power and then switch it back on. Weird!!! ain't it?

I bought this piece primarily for the airplay feature, hope pioneer comes up with the fix very soon.

However, I'm curious if the pioneer 1121K also has the same issue or as a matter of fact any device that supports Airplay.
