Need advice on 2.1 system for music only

I need advice on a reasonably priced 2.1 receiver for the following purposes only:

- Play CDs in 2.1 (i.e., stereo plus sub)

- Connect to my iPod

This project started when I tried to add a subwoofer to my 20-year old JVC system to listen to Wagner operas. Unfortunately, there's no sub-out on my receiver. My research tells me I either need to replace the receiver or do some hot-wiring I'm not comfortable with in order to add the sub. If I'm going to buy a new one, I might as well get one that will connect with my iPod Classic.

There are decent 2-channel receivers (e.g., Onkyo TX-8255, Pioneer Elite SX-A6-J, etc.) for under $200 that would do for sound quality, but they lack either a dedicated sub output, an iPod connector, or both.

Can anyone recommend a good, inexpensive receiver (say, under $300) that will do these two things? I've been looking at the Denon AVR-1912, but it's out of my price range and built for 7.2 sound anyway.

even if a receiver is built for 7.1 that does'nt mean you have to use all those channels. look for open box deals where you shop for electronics.

Even a 5.1 receiver on sale would be perfect. Not only would it have a sub-out, but for music you can use the 6-channel stereo setting, which in my opinion, is wonderful for music because it uses all speakers AND the sub for excellent sound. For your budget you would need to find a close-out model. You may have a tough time finding a decent stereo receiver that has an iPod connection. Keep in mind that in a pinch, you can connect a iPod to any receiver using a cable connected to the headphone jack. No, you won't see the iPod menu on-screen, but it works.

As far as re-wiring a stereo receiver to connect to a sub, forget it. It's more than just connecting another speaker. It involves being able to discreetly separating the frequencies for the appropriate speakers which can't be done.

I settled on a Marantz SR6005 (for $579) and a Emotiva Ultra 12 sub (clearance prices at $379). Used one of the extra channels to bi-amp my Paradigm speakers. Will set it up tomorrow--wish me luck.

In that price range, the subs are crappy, so not having one, even listening to deep Wagner passages 24/7 won't mean much IME and O. You might like the results better if you focused on a pair of high quality stereo speakers instead. There are some good bargains on used stuff if you know where to look. Classical is one genre of music where the utility of having extremely good quality speakers can make a huge impact on the listener's ears.
