Home audio & video forum: Firmware update on a LG 3D TV?

LG would probably know better than us. Give them the model number using the chat on line or email link:

...I rarely recommend that neophytes update firmware unless they have been specifically instructed to do so by tech support. More often than not getting an HDTV properly calibrated is the fix rather than firmware upgrades.
Is there something specific (e.g. an identified bug or flaw) the firmware is supposed to address instead of 'better picture'?

So before LG's firmware update on its Cinema 3D TVs, people were saying passive 3D TVs are infereior to active 3D TVs in picture quality (I saw both of them at a store but I hardly noticed any difference. But I guess this depends on people). It's true that technically, passive 3D TVs send out 540i to each eye when showing the images while active 3D TVs send out 1080i, being a full HDTV. So LG took this advice and upgraded their passive 3D TVs so now they send 1080i to each eye. So I guess that makes full HD 1080p image on LG Cinema 3D TVs.

LG released the firmware for the Cinema 3D TVs just a few months ago. This update made better 3D pictures by changing algorithm of how it generates the 3D images. Basically, the update made it possible to show more pictures in a same amount of time(refresh rate), therefore it fixed the problem that has been an issue for a long time; showing full 1080 lines instead of 540 for each eyes, which results in an improvement on picture quality. Actually, I didn't feel any discomfort or see a lower picture quality, but the update would give you even better picture quality, so if you purchased the 3D TV from LG before June, check if the update is available for you too.

I followed your advice and installed the update with the help of my friend(who is slightly better than me on this topic lol) It wasn't that complicated as I thought. I easily updated the firmware with a little help of LG tech support rep. My TV works perfectly fine. It didn't mess up the calibration or settings on my TV but it actually improved the picture quality! I think picture quality on my LG TV was good enough, but it is good to have a better one now. I see the picture has become even clearer and more crisp. You guys who haven't updated your TV should do the same. Thank you guys for kind advice and help!

I have the LG 55lw5700 3D TV. Love the tv but recently the tv informed me of a firmware update available via pop up box on the screen. I figured sure, why not. Well, after the update it started to shut itself off them turn itself on. It would happen randomly but at least 1 per hour, sometimes more. I contacted LG support and they suggested I do a reset also unplug and hold the power button down. Nothing! They wanted to send out a tech but the tv was 2 months old and I wasn't comfortable with it so I exchanged it for the same.

When I turn the tv on, it reminds me of an available update but I am a bit leery due to past experience.

Do I update or not?

Anyone else with this problem? I'd love to hear from you...

I upgraded mine too and it feels like I purchased a new TV. That's what I love about updates. It makes you feel like you bought a brand new TV. I'm even more glad to have gotten this update because I was already satisfied with the TV and it just got whole lot better!
