widescreen ?tion

I just purchased the kp-57wv600 sony, I was watching a dvd in wide screen format, but it still showed the black bars; top and bottom. I thought by having a widescreen tv it would eliminate the black bars?
Am i suppose to use the zoom option for this?
I would apreciate anybody's advise.

Your widescreen ratio is 16:9 or 1.85 aspect ratio. If the DVD is greater than this such as 2.35 aspect ratio you will still have black bars. Many movies are 1.85 you will not have black bars wuth these. But many action movies are shot much wider such as 2.40. You will have bars with those. If the ratio is less than 1.85 the bars will begin to show on the sides. I hope this helps you.

16:9 aspect ratio isn't 1.85:1, it's 1.78:1. wink

If it bother you then go ahead and zoom. Personally I wouldn't do a thing; Black bar doesn't bother me.

And the purpose of widescreen TV's isn't actually to watch widescreen DVD's, but to watch the HDTV television format, which is specifically 16:9.

There is more than 1 widescreen format so this could be the cause of you seeing black bars. Your DVD should list the aspect ratio (picture format) on the back cover. You may be watching a 2.35:1 widescreen DVD. You may also want to check the settings on your DVD player as well in case the menu provides more than 1 output format. Finally, most new widescreen TV's have multiple picture format settings which will change the aspect ratio of your image. Choose the one that you feel offer the best picture.
