configuring speakers

I have my LA55A950 LED TV set up with a Yamaha amp and a 4 speaker system. I set it to "external speakers". I have since found that my amp, as most do, will not create speaker sound at the same time as using headphones. I would like to have both working at the same time. The amp is connnected by optical audio which is the only available connection. Can my TV speakers remain operative at the same time as the amp? I don't seem to be able to access the area to see - greyed out. I've probably done something wrong... Any thoughts?

My tv sound and amp. sound works at the same time. I generally don't want them to work at the same time (echo effect). I usually mute the TV sound.

I understand the issue there. Just thought that I could use the amp to operate the headphones and use the TV speakers for everyone else. No echoing that way. May need to default the system and start the setup again.

Help to re-do setup

Seems that the Yamaha amp won't reproduce audio from its audio out point, if the input is optical.
This leaves me with little choice but to try to make the TV speakers and the amp speakers work together, unless someone has a bright idea.
Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to access the choice of speakers in the sound menu - greyed out. Any ideas why?
I was wondering, if I was to completely re-do the initial setup again, I could then probably access the sound area fully. Anyone know how to restart the setup from the beginning? I can't find anything in the manual.

TV speakers have sound, AV speakers no sound and earphone sound ok.

Do you have optical or analogue input into your amp?

Being a Sony, I can't really comment. Perhaps you don't have digital/optical sound as the input into the amp? This seems to be the issue with the Yamaha.

Amp input

I have both optical and (6)analogue input points on the amp. I have used the optical when connecting the TV because that is the only one the TV has (out).
Am considering getting a DAC to position between the TV and the amp so I can use an analogue in on the amp. Don't know anything about DAC's though. Another learning curve.
