A/V Receivers 5.1 and 7.1 compatibility

I have been researching A/V receivers and some of the 7.1 models list 5.1 channel input option and others don't. Everything that I have read so far says 5.1 will work fine one a 7.1 receiver (with some cool options for the left over unused channels). Is this a marketing deal or has the receivers change in a way that unless it list 5.1 as an option it won't work as well on a 5.1 speaker setup?

As I understand it, they are all backwards compatible.

7.1 av receivers will drive 5.1, 5.0, 3.1, 3.0, 2.1, and 2.0 setups.

Programming today, be it OTA digital, cable, or satellite, provides 5.1 only. Some DVDs and most BR provide 7.1. 7.1 receivers are capable of running anything input to them.

You are right as I originally understood it, they would all run any format. I just did not understand why when you would run product comparisons they would list 5.1 or 6.1 etc. as a feature on some models and not on others. This seems to be just another marketing tool for the manufactures and stores to push the models to the unsuspecting/uneducated consumers that they want to sell.
