DirecTV On Demand

Can someone please explain to me how the On Demand feature works on DirecTV? I'm not talking about the content you have to pay extra for (movies, special events, etc). I'm talking about the content that comes for free. The way I understand it is that I have to connect my receiver to my internet connection and then "download" the shows I want to watch, right? I also understand that certain channels, for example HBO, have extra content available On Demand.

I'm new to DirecTV, coming in after years of being a Comcast cable subscriber. Now, I hate to give props to Comcast (their antics are well known to all and have been well documented, so I won't bore you with the steamy details), but if what I understand of DirecTV is true (its setup), then Comcast was a lot easier and more practical because you basically had to do nothing but watch whatever the channels made available to their customers.

Can someone clarify how On Demand works on DirecTV? Thanks.

"On demand" in my mind means pay/view. Free I have never heard of; without all the details, I don't think anyone can answer that...maybe someone works for DirecTV? It just doesn't sound right right. I think their internet services always has a cap. Maybe that's how they get their pay (over the limit). Just guessing.

Is not all for pay. Some content is free. And just to clarify, I don't have internet service through DirecTV, it's just that you have to connect to the internet (via whatever ISP you have) to get the on demand content.

link (provide by Pepe7). You don't need any internet connection, but you do need either a HR20 or HR21 set-top box. I guess when you signed up for video on demand, which is free, they will make an extra ethernet connection to the box (if not already there). But my suggestion is talk to the DirecTV people. They should know. Good luck.

That's where I saw the downloads listed when I visited a friend's house.

If nothing's visible there or the queue, I'd call to verify your on demand trial is actually active and their head end can 'see' your box. YMMV.

...I saw nothing that I wanted to download to see. There was no free content available, and, even according to the FAQs, there should be some.
