Vinyl Record Player Troubleshooting

Ok folks, dont laugh. Vinyl is still a Cottage Industry even after CD's becoming obsolete. Im trying to diagnose a problem with my old Gerrard Semi-Automatic Turntable. I assume its the needle but am not sure. Replacing it might cost more than a decent MP3 player today.

The problem is that I have to turn the volume sky-hi just to get anything out of one channel only (no stereo.) I verified all four connecting wires from the needle to the RCA jacks are solid. This model takes the "receiver-type" needle that it attached to a little plastic "receiver" bay that slides up into the rectangular-metal box (instead of the "stand-alone" needle type.)


So would it be the needle or the metal box, or something else.

What is the model number of the turntable? If you are sure the problem is not the pre-amp or the amplifier then I would say it's the cartridge (I believe the needle is part of the unit). It has been so long..I am not sure now.

Needle and Cartridge Separate

No model number it has a 1988 date code, probably the only SemiAutomatic Gerrard made. The needle detatches from the cartridge (thats what that rectangular thing was called! he-he). I cant find any cartrige-only's on ebay however, but needles ($10). [Im glad mine wasnt Hitachi, eBay lister wanted $250 for that tiny cartridge!]

Im going to assume the problem is the cartridge and not the needle. Its the only thing left in the line of elimination Im unable to test properly. Its not the amp cus I tested the CD player in the Phono input jacks with no problems. Ive alread tore the player apart and verified that theres really no other electronics to troubleshoot but the cartridge.
