notebook->hdtv fail

Hey guys
So I'm trying to hook up my notebook to an HDTV:
I have a Fujitsu T-series notebook with Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME gfx card and Windows XP SP3; the notebook is sitting in a docking station with a DVI port. A DVI/HDMI converter is plugged into the DVI port, and connected with HDMI to the tv (tv doesnt have monitor cable port). The hdtv is set to the hdmi channel, but just shows a black screen. The notebook doesnt seem to recognize the TV, the display settings just show the "default monitor". Can anyone point me in the right direction?
My hypothesis is that the DVI port in the docking station isnt actually used by the video card, so no signal is sent, but im not too familiar with all this.
