Not to mention optical and digital coaxial connections have been available since the 90's and they are digital as well. Receivers usually act as the decoding point for all this information. Speakers need power to function hence the need for speaker cable. Wireless speakers are not know for their sound quality and you still have to provide power to them so you might as well just run the speaker cable.

The reason I asked the question may seem silly. I live in a small apartment and I had my stereo in the corner of the room because that was the most convenient place to put it. I spent $1000 on its components back in 1999, an NAD amp and CD Player, two NHT speakers and a subwoofer from Infinity. I had the amp hooked up to a DVD player too as well as to my tv. However, the speaker wires were finicky and I kept having to reconnect them to the amp and the speakers. Because it was such a hassle to get into the corner of the room and access the backs of the equipment, I finally decided to stop trying. So, lately I haven't been using the stereo at all. The situation just made me wonder whether it's possible to hook speakers up using something more modern than speaker wire. USB is used to hook up speakers up to computers so I thought maybe there was something equivalent for speakers used with real stereo equipment. Sounds like there isn't.

If you are as old as I...it's a pain. The issue in your case here I doubt it will be solve with usb speaker. Like I said before, if there is no advantage to usb, they are not going to make them. Yeah I can see young strong friends would be nice to have around now.
