VHS vs. Beta (what, again?!?)

One reason I still have my Sony Beta VCR (aside from all the tapes I have available for it) is that if/when I do record to tape, the quality of the Beta recordings generally exceeds what I could get from my Super VHS machines. (Of course, note that I have an SL-HF860D Super Beta HiFi digital beta machine which cost around 1,000 1988 dollars.) I know VHS can squeeze more recoding time on a single cassette, and I know that Super VHS with 4 heads can be a better editing deck. Still, my off-the-air beta recordings always looked better right after I recorded them than VHS, and stayed looking better longer. (Commercial analog Beta tapes were another matter, though.)
The format war may be long over and, yes, VHS won, but I still would never give up my Beta deck. It's also worth noting that it's still going strong long after many other machines have long since died.
