Laptop to HDTV Sound issues (HDMI Cable used)

Hey guys,

I have scoured the CNET forums that have helped me in most of the issues raised in the laptop to TV connections, except for this one:

I have gotten the video to work etc., I can play games, watch movies and work in general. But the sound is still played through the laptop rather than my TV.

So I did what the forums told me to do, select "SPDIF" in the Sound control panel. Now, I get no sound at all, BUT the little equalizer jumps up and down (green bars), which means that sound is being transmitted, but my tv is not playing it.

I have checked the obvious things:
Proper connection
TV volume is maxed out

So I am assuming there is a settings problem with my TV.

Laptop:
HP DV6

TV:
Samsung Series 8 Plasma HDTV (52")

Could you guys help me out?

Not all TVs want to play along with HDMI and while I'm doing fine here if you didn't find a control panel to tell Windows (what version?) to send it over HDMI (it's under speakers here) then you have hit the usual sonic wall.

It's a common problem with no one answer that works widely. In fact I have some dozen answers and solutions but here's the problem. It's an area that the makers screwed up on.
