Stupid question about separate DVD and VCR units

I am probably going to replace my Go Video DVD/VCR Combo this week, mainly because the VCR is dead and the DVD has never been 100 percent. I am leaning toward buying separate units this time for obvious reasons (most likely Panasonic; my TV also is Panasonic). My question is basic and maybe dumb, but I need to ask it anyway; what is the best way to hook up separate units to my TV? I'm looking for efficiency and convenience.

While I'm at it, can anyone recommend the best universal remote for controlling all three components? Thanks Much.

Without knowing all about you equipments/system, I problaly do it this ways; Dvd (svideo out) to TV(svideo in). DVD (video-audio out) to VCR (video-audio in). Antenna to vcr (ant. in) then VCR (ant. out) to TV (ant. in). There maybe other combinations but this is my pick.

The best way for efficiency and convenience would be if your TV has 2 sets of RCA inputs. You could hook the VCR up to Video1 and the DVD to Video2.

If that's not possible, I recommend you hook up the VCR to your TV's RCA inputs or coaxial input, and hook up the DVD to your VCR's RCA inputs. The downside to this is that depending on your VCR, you may notice artifacts of the DVD's MacroVision signal (bad brightness and contrast and possibly image distortion).

As far as universal remotes go... there are many out there, and it can be hit-or-miss with brand-new devices. Find a store with a good refund/exchange policy so that you can return the remote you buy if it's totally useless to you.
This is a funny and true story - I work at a local retailer and also shop there of course.... in the electronics section, on one of the racks, there is a certain brand and model of universal remote, and there were 6 or 7 of them there, and every single package had been oopened.

You need to hook up your Dvd player to the best available source (Component, S-video, Rca inputs). The Vcr should be connected to the next best available input (Rca, coaxial). Most universal remotes will work with Panasonic. Just make sure the remote has a directional keypad and other buttons similar to a dvd player. I am partial to "One for all" remotes, they are inexpensive and work well.
