Home audio & video forum: What does this firmware update mean for me?

The Common Internet File System (CIFS) Protocol is a dialect of SMB. Both SMB and CIFS are also available on VMS, several versions of Unix, and other operating systems including Windows OS's.

With that update and this new protocol made it possible for my 390 to access all "shared" Volumes, Folders, Directories on all the PC's and Macs on my network. It is amazing. I can access everything. Once directed in the right direction(s) things appeared all over and more than I expected. When I first fired up my 390, it was a good three days before I put a disc in the machine, and I have been using it on a network basis more than I would ever imagine. Which means no real rush to update my library to BD. Plus I think it added Vudu or CinemaNow to the online selections. The only thing missing is Pandora or a music service. Although, it will read/play a volume of audio files as if served from an online audio service with several ways to view and select what's playing. Only a few file formats are not fully or completely compatible, otherwise, completely perfect. Except for the 2.4GHz 802.11N not 5GHz. It now makes and will make a big difference in the future. I'm hoping that they use a firmware upgradable radio chip and one day will be surprised with 11N @ 5GHz.
