So is it free though...does it cost anything to use it? Does it tell you if it costs anything when you try to use it??

No on the virus question, at least from everything I've read. Aside from the gimmicky stuff, being connected to the internet allows you to do a firmware upgrade. In the menu there is a setting for upgrading firmware, and typically you do this by connecting to the internet or downloading to a computer then burning it to a CD and inserting the CD and going to the same menu setting. Firmware upgrades aren't worth keeping a BR player permanently connected to the internet as firmware upgrades only happen every so often.

Go to the Panasonic website and click on Support. I haven't been there for awhile, but I think you type in the model number of your player and you will be directed to any firmware upgrades. Find out what version of Firmware is available at the site, then go into your DVD players setup options to check for Firmware, and match the version your DVD player has vs. what is available. No need to download if the versions are the same. But, if you need to upgrad, you download it to your computer desktop, then simply drag it to a CD and burn (basically copy the data file and burn it to a CD). Then insert the CD into your DVD player and go into the setup options where you should find an option for Firmware Upgrade. Click and the data will update and you're done. As far as a virus on your PC, I guess there might be a chance, so go ahead and virus scan the file, but typically the files from respected site like Panasonic should be good.
