Home audio & video forum: Can 1 LCD go split screen and be a dual monitor?

At last year's NAB convention I saw a Toshiba monitor that had 4 inputs and each one could be displayed in a quadrant of the monitor, and each had a resolution of 1980X1080 (which meant the monitor had 4 times this resolution). But this was a broadcast monitor and it was made so each input could be shown as full-screen or 1/4-screen. Most consumer level TVs and monitors don't do this, but it could be done at a cost.

You can't request a TV to be made this way, but each company most likely makes these for their industrial applications. Check each companies website, like Panasonic, Sony, Samung and Toshiba, then check in their industrial or broadcast application areas, not the consumer areas. These type of monitors won't be cheap. I saw a 15" monitor made by Marshall Electronics that had a built-in quad splitter to get 4 images on the single screen, and it was $2300.00. You may be able to find a stand-alone signal splitter that then connects to a single input. Don't know, I've never done this before.

What you intend to do with it. 3 things comes to mind; multitasking, multiple desktop, and extending of desktop.

Most people who want to do this typically setup two monitors side-by-side, then the mouse cursor simply goes from one monitor to the other and each monitor is dedicated to one application. I don't know about your applications, but typically one monitor is needed to display each application in a large enough format to be useful, and two monitors typically allow for this.
