You have sort of illustrated why HTPCs (and computers in general) can be much more useful & flexible. You have control over a greater portion the software and hardware involved in the capturing/displaying/converting process. There are quite a lot of snafus that can come up with otherwise very solid A/V equipment, even using reliable media brands such as Verbatim, etc. Some standalone players simply can't give you all the bells and whistles that a basic DVD drive on a PC often can.
Regarding you question though, it really depends, as Bob said in his comment about interoperability. There are subtle differences that prevent the DVDs from even being read at all sometimes, let alone maintain specific features that may be subject to the proprietary system contained in a specific DVD player/recorder. It can take a bit of patience to determine what method or methods will work for your setup.
