1080p vs. 1080i (Which is better?)

I bought a 52 inch RCA HDTV back in Christmas 2006. I admit I did not do a lot of research back then. I recently bought a PS3 to help compliment my HD and console gaming experience, even bought the HDMI cables and the PS3 remote. I've been seeing a lot of references to 1080p resolution as opposed to 1080i (which my HDTV has). Am I working with old technology? The blu-ray titles and the gaming looks amazing, however somehow I've got the feeling that I'm one step behind with all of these references to 1080p. Thanks in advance.

1080i/p

1080p is better than 1080i technically, but only for certain close-rang viewing distances depending on the size of your HDTV. If you have a 50" HDTV and sit more than 8 feet away from it I don't think you could tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p easily.

Your TV isn't archaic yet, just that more movies are being made in 1080p natively. If you are happy with the picture quality of your TV, then that is all that matters. Just ride out your TV till it starts to breakdown and then buy whatever the latest tech is.

Hey thanks for the reply. I've been browsing some of the posts and from what people are saying its the HDMI cables that enables 1080p. I might have 1080p enabled and don't realize it. I'll check the display settings on my PS3 and see if thats the case. The one thing I didn't do was customize the settings to 1080p, but instead checked "automatic".

Both are 1920X1080 pixels.

I or P states how the image is displayed. In theory progressive is better. Look at owners manual, what is native resolution of your HDTV? John

Thanks for the reply, I'll check the manual tonight. But I pose the same question to you as to the last person that replied: Doesn't the HDMI cable enables it to 1080p from 1080i?

technically, it's the display

that allows 1080p. If your tv is 1080p, then technically everything you watch is in 1080p. The difference from there is if your source is natively 1080 or not. And yes, HDMI cables allow 1080p bandwidth. Only necessary with bluray really AFAIK. Component connections will allow the necessary rez from all of your tv signals, or at least 99.999% of them, which are 720p or 1080i.

You need hdmi connection to displace 1080p signal but...if you TV is not 1080p then it will NEVER display 1080p regardless of what connections you use. It will downconvert/downscale for your display. Hope this shine a little more light.

1080i and ps3

I have a 1080i tv that I recently just hooked a PS3 up to using HDMI a cable. When it did it's original optimizing scan, it set itself to run at 720p. Does the ps3 not recognize the 1080i? If not, that's pretty disappointing to know that I'm missing out on a better looking image.

The main home page is 720 but if u Warhol a movie like avi or blue and check it it will change or even in game it will change to 1080i or p. But when u go back to home screen it 720 always
