Laptop to TV and receiver - how to get surround sound?

I recently bought an HP notebook and have hooked up the computer to my TV with an HMDI cable. I have an Onkyo receiver and surround sound and was wondering if there is a way to get stereo surround sound from a dvd playing on my laptop. On my old dvd player I think I used an optical cord and plugged it into the receiver, but don't have that option with the laptop. Thanks.

Sorry, I meant I used a coaxial cable to hook up my dvd to the receiver. Thanks.

The TV is a vizio and does have a digital optical out

as well as the red and white analog outs. I have plugged both into the receiver, but I am only getting sound from the 2 side speakers and the TV using either of the inputs. My receiver didn't show an option to use more than the left and right speaker. Also, when I had my dvd player hooked up, I could turn the volume off of my TV and get surround sound through my speakers. Now, with the laptop hooked up to the TV via hdmi and the TV hooked up to the receiver I need to have the volume of the TV up if I want to hear sound from the stereo, which doesn't sound good (and there's no surround sound). Thanks for your help John. Michael
