Help on connecting HDTV to Stereo Receiver

I have a new HDTV - Sharp with integrated DVD Player. However, it's not hooked up to a cable box and I'm playing DVDs while working out. For TV, I'm just viewing over the air broadcast signals.

I thought it would be simple enough to improve the sound by connecting the HDTV right to the AUX connections to my stereo receiver using the red/white analog cables. However, I get no sound. I've been trying to adjust the audio settings on the TV with no success. Should the red/white cables be enough to get sound from the stereo; or do I need other cables? The receiver is a 5.1 Surround Sound receiver so has all of the various connections. Thanks for any advice.

funny that it isn't. Well, since you've played with the tv settings, have you played with the receiver settings?

are you sure those AUX connections at the tv are for output. and not input?

if you're sure, and you've done all settings, the only thing I can think of is trying a different receiver . . . to help diagnose.

if its the receiver's issue, and you need to buy something, self powered monitors can be an interesting idea, such as those by behringer or mackie.

Checked again and noticed that the connections are in fact INPUT as you stated. Duh. The HDTV (small 19 incher) only has digital output...no red/white cables. So, I used a mini jack and linked the TV headphone jack into the (Radio Shack) receiver headphone jack. Voila, sound! And the sound quality is pretty good too given it's a crude and inexpensive set up, and it drowns out the drone of the treadmill happy. Eventually, I'll split my cable line and bring it down into the basement so I can watch real TV.
