Noticeable difference between 192khz and 96khz playback?

I am looking at sound cards for my new PC and am trying to figure out if I will really notice the difference between the much more expensive 192khz output cards and the 96khz ones.

If not the difference can be important.

In other words, humans can't hear that but you will find some that claim to.

My understanding has always been that it's more important when recording (as the other reply points out), but when listening it's basically just a lot more money

The DB signal to noise ratio. Some cards are terrible and I'm going to toss out an off the cuff number of 100 dBm.

As you say, it can vary widely, but it seems like once you get above 100dB you start paying much more for slight increases, which again may or may not even be noticeable.

I have not heard a difference between these 2 sampling rates personally. They are noticeably better than 44.1 from a cd. It's basically taking a snapshot of your digital information either 96 thousand times or 192 thousand times. It should technically sound a little smoother and transients should be clearer but you're talking about small differences that some people claim to hear, some do not. In recording it is important to have these higher rates because they do provide a more accurate recording.
