How to hook PC speakers to TV + PS3?

Hi all - I've got an Olevia 323 V 23" HDTV in my room (a very small room), and I have a Playstation 3 hooked up to it via HDMI. The picture and sound both work great, but the built in speakers from the TV are pretty weak. I wanted to use this set of creative inspire 2.1 pc speakers that I have to play the audio coming out from the TV.
I hooked up the speakers normally and I took the audio plug from the speakers and plugged it into the headphone jack of the TV, thinking that would work, but the sound still came out from the TV speakers. I then tinkered around with the PS3 settings ( I tried hooking up the Red and White RCA from the PS3 to the proper inputs on the TV, and then the speakers to the headphone jack again; also changed the output audio settings on the PS3 from HDMI to the analog, but then I got no sound from anywhere).
So, what should I do if I wanted to connect the external PC speakers to my TV so that I can hear the TV audio from them at all times (when watching TV , watching movies, or playing games on the PS3)? Please no recommendations on buying more expensive speakers or units, unless there is no other way around it - thanks alot for your help in advance
