Sony VCR - almost no sound

I have a Sony VCR, SLV-440. Sometimes it does not record the sound properly. When this happens, you can hardly hear sound if you turn it all the way up. However, other times it records just fine. Any help would be appreciated

Replace the cables or at least make sure all connections are tight. It is probably time to dump the VCR and get a DVD recorder with a digital tuner.
