While they may dismiss you, gettting your complaint on record within the first day will be your best defense if the odor does not subside in the next few days.

I emailed and asked Sony. Here is the response I received.

We are really sorry for the confusion. However, new televisions may produce an unusual smell or odor when first turned on. Due to the manufacturing process of components, televisions and other electronic products can have parts with plastic coatings that may produce a smell after the product is first turned on and warms up. The smell will usually dissipate within a few hours of use and does not return. This is normal and occurs with many electronic products.

NOTE: If the smell continues to linger even after the television has been turned off, ensure there is sufficient ventilation in the room and the odor will dissipate.

HOWEVER LCDS ARE NOT KNOWN GET THAT HOT IF there is any ventilation.

I came across this forum and I had to reply. Nine days ago, we purchased a Sony 46" Bravia LCD 1080P 120 Hz HDTV. We noticed a repulsive burning electronics odor coming from the top of this television whenever it was turned on. The odor literally made my wife and I sick (headache and nausea). We hoped the internal electronics just needed to burn off some manufacturing residue, but the odor never improved. Always a sickening burnt electronics odor was present throughout our house whenever the this TV was turned on.

On the eighth day, while the television was on, the screen went black for several minutes. That was the last straw, we boxed up the set that evening and returned it to the store on the ninth day.

Not sure if this burning electronic odor was specific to our particular television, or is inherent in all large LCD HDTV's. This was our first HDTV purchase, and needless to say, we are very disappointed with this specific Sony LCD television.
