DVD vs. HD-DVD

Just want to get some opinions out there...have not been able to get any feedback online and the retailers are going to tell you what they want to sell! Here is the question, is there really really that big of a pic difference between standard dvd (if it is in progressive scan so 480p not 480i) and HD-DVD that outputs 1080p itself? Let me give you some info, I have a decent dvd player with progressive scan (as are most dvd players on the market) hooked up to my 50" Panasonic plasma and I personally think the movies look pretty darn good according to my eyes. I find it really interesting to say the least that you can not go to any of these box stores (ie best buy, circuit city, etc) at least in my area and see a side by side comparison of an HD-DVD player (whether it be Blue Ray or HD-DVD) hooked up to either LCD or plasma HDTV and right next to it show a standard dvd player outputting 480p into an HDTV (preferably the same brand display the HD-DVD source is hooked up to) so you can stand side by side and truly attempt to notice a difference. Either two things are stopping these folks from doing this: 1. My statements are somewhat valid and not as many people would buy or upgrade to HD-DVD if they physically saw the comparison or 2. There is such a substancial difference between the two they feel like they do not need to show the difference. I am a betting man and I sure am leaning towards #1. Would love to hear some comments and first hand experience, and please be specific if possible (ie crisper images in certain movies that you cannot pick out on standard dvd w/480p output).
Thanks,
Michael
