Cable Cards aren't dead yet...
First, I don't want another box -- let alone another remote.
Second, I have a TV and TiVo Series 3 that both support cable cards. I'd need 2 DirecTV boxes to drive the TiVo alone. And yes, I do prefer TiVo's UI over any I've seen from cable companies, not to mention the constantly expanding array of services (remote scheduling, TiVo to Go, Live365, podcasts, etc.) make it compelling.
Third, Cable Cards will be around for a while. FCC rules are actually making them more prevalent and most new cable boxes will end up having a card plugged in the back. That is until cable finalizes a software solution.
Is a cable card an ideal solution? No. But, it is part of the evolutionary process, is better than the clutter and wiring of multiple boxes, and slightly more elegant.
The question still remains -- is there a technical hurdle that prohibits DirecTV (or Dish Network for that matter) from offering a cable card solution?
