i agree 100% ...i bought an "unknown" brand took it home, hooked it up , and nothing buy problems..couldn't even get it to turn on correctly..took it back ..got a polaroid and been great ever since..go with name brand all the way vaio or whatever they are stink!!
No Wait we are not asking the right question
First I love the topic however, why did cnet not talk about how they are manufactured. If a cold solder joint Sony is made in the same factory as these no name brands or stamp brand ie(Westinghouse/GE/Vizio). Then I think we are dealing with the same TVs.
Whats the process of creating a no name brand TV do I just import them and pay some small design house to make some changes.
It seems to me that the questions concerning "years of trouble free service, stunning picture quality and a company that will stand behind there product" have been answered . . . and I bet that the lousy picture quality on their TVs has to do with setup or signal, not the TVs themselves.

I was just wondering what manufactuer you work for? Years of trouble free service? how can you say that, even the best names in tech produce lemons now and then. good example: canon.wonderful name, high price on cameras, E18 issues ! processor issues! And canon DIDN'T stand behind thier e18 issue charging customers to repair, and I belive it would be the same from TV manufacturers, thats why the warranties are LIMITED.

talk about being vague! i have never seen a tv look good ANYWHERE in ANY store! they all run one dvd player and hook it up to 50 tvs. some have been tweaked by the morons working the stores who don't have a clue what they're doing and some are just working on default settings. either way, they can't possibly shine like they do when you get them home and hook up your hi-def signal via HDMI.
i did my research on CNET and they reviewed the 50 inch Vizio and it sounded like a great TV to me. plus, costco and sam's both offer returns for like 30 days and exchanges for at least a year, if not more.
the 42 inch vizio didn't test as well as the 50 inch so i got the 50 inch and then got the panasonic 42 inch. the vizio absolutely rocks! built solid, great features, awesome picture, the packaging, their website, the whole company looks pro to me. and with that return policy, there's no reason in the world not to give them a try.
i would tend to think that a new comer would go the extra mile to help their customers to get a good rep and they definitely have it with me. although i've yet to need customer support, if they drop the ball, i'll take it back to sam's a get something else...but so far, it's fantastic.
you think just because it says sony or pioneer that you won't have problems and then not have problems with customer service? the internet is FULL of people swearing they will never purchase from these "brand name" companies again. and besides, are you so naive to think these TVs aren't all the same? they are. it all boils down to how good the glue is they use and how they take care of customers.
i'm more than happy i saved a few hundred bucks and got something i love to look at everyday. and i always check CNET before i buy something and even take their word with a grain of salt. one man's garbage...

Go buy a Vizio. They are just as good as any Sony ever will be. beautiful color. When I chose it , I chose the one with the best color and picture. I chose it over Philips , Sony , Samsung , Sharp , etc. It had the best color and picture of all that were playing on display. I have had it for three years and the color and picture is just as good as the day I bought it. No problems what-so ever. And my next one will be a Vizio also.

Vizio is fine
If you judge what ANY TV looks like at Walmart, you are the one that needs checked. They don't have any HD source playing on those TV's. They play a standard DVD upconverted. For giggles, I looked at the back of the Vizio they had on display, and a COAXIAL cable was providing the picture. If you are not bright enough to check on that kind of thing, you are not bright enough to avoid paying 1,000 more for a brand name.
It's the old Circuit City scam. They have the Sony's all hooked up to HDMI HD, using blueray, and they have the Vizio in the corner with a coax going into it. This way, they lead you to buy the more expensive TV. You need to do your homework before even looking at TVs.
Check out a Vizio where they have HD Cable or Satellite. For the money, it's perfectly fine. I don't own one, but if I was in the market for a plasma, I surely would consider them.
And don't look now, but the new Vizio 60 Plasma drew rave reviews at CES, including one from Mr. Mark Cuban.
It funny you should say that...
Because I did check out the cabling and kept going back and forth checking out all the T.V.'s at Costco before I bought a Vizio 42" 1080p. It clearly stood out with great rendition, detail and color for the price and when you are at Costco, and you know items are discounted, you don't stop and think is this product going to last for this discounted price of $1099.00. I bought it anyway. I was very happy with it for the first 94 days until it died, on day 95, black screen, no menus, and no sound.
Costco has changed their return and exchange policy to 90 days as of this year so, have to go through Vizio's warranty repair.
Just over a week later after speaking with the repair person assigned from Vizio, who ordered repair parts without ever seeing the T.V. the warranty repair person came out and repaired my set by replacing the power supply module. The set is still dead. Now he is ordering a new logic board which is estimated to take "another week or so" to ship it to him. Where are they shipping it from and what method that it takes "another week or so" to get a simple logic board to the repair person?
One of the earlier posts pertained to Sony's extremely slow warranty service. I think you can add Vizio to that same list and add a second spot for extreme premature failure. No $1100.00 set should fail in 3 months.
Buying Anything at Walmart
Come on, give me a break. Buying anything at Walmart is a JOKE!Walmart cuts special deals with its manufacturers to get lower cost versions of products. They don't last and break easily. Any electronics bought at Walmart is a waste of time and hard earned money.
BUT you can't make a conclusion that buying off-name brands doesn't work because of a bad experience with a Walmart unit. Buy your electronics somewhere else next time, like Costco. Costco has good prices and carries real products.
Walmart is a loser outfit. Stay away from loser outfits.
Walmart demo sets are setup by 15yo that couldnt care less of what the pictre look like, and most store plug the TV to 20$ DVD players with the s-vhs cable.... Any tv will look bad in those conditons...
I have a Samsung 40inch LCD and a Sharp 1080p projector (paid 8500$), i think i know what a good picture look like, and all i have to say is that my budy 1000$ 42inch ILO plasma that he get at walmart is every bit as good looking as any 720p out there.
Walmart customer service can't be better, you don't like it, take it back, no questions ask.... it's broken? take it back!
I went in a lot of ''boutique'' vendors selling only top of the line products and most of them will only give you the company phone number and let you sort your problem by your own, ending up with no tv for 3 month and having to call zillion times to have the tv back...

If someone has to "tell me" which set has a better picture, I'll go ahead and save the thousand plus dollars. I couldn't tell much difference at all between the Vizio, the Sony or Sanyo. I suspect a lot of people pre-judge based on what they read. If the Vizio has a worse picture, I sure couldn't see it. Also I bought it at Costco, and
they take better care of their customers than any "Name Brand" company. This is all kind of funny any ways, since they're all made in China, does brand name mean that much anymore?
The picture is lousy, that's why.

I went out to buy a Vizio 42" plasma, and I WANTED to like it. I'm a big believer in getting the best bang for my bucks. I wanted to be able to gloat that I had paid hundreds less than someone else and got just as good a picture.
But no matter what I did, no matter what signal source I tried, no matter what adjustments I made, I could not get the picture on the Vizio to look acceptable. It wasn't as bad as the Maxent, but still, the colors were dim unless the tv was in full blaze mode, the picture was very soft, like an out of focus tube tv. The blacks were barely gray. There was little detail in dark parts of the screen.
In short, it just didn't have a picture that was acceptable at any price.
So I spent $200 more than the Vizio, (but still $300 less than a Panasonic and $800 less than a the Pioneer) and bought a Phillips that I have been extremely happy with. The picture rivals the Panasonic, but is not as good as the Pioneer. But it's not $800 worse than the Pioneer, so I feel I got the best bang possible for my dollars.
There may be some minor advantages to the better known brands but after just a month I'm very happy with my VX37L VIZIO. The packaging was very impressive, the out of the box set-up was just about what I like, there's minimum glare (reflection) compared to all Plasmas and the price was hundreds less than the expensively advertised big names. Perhaps it won't last as long, we'll see. Right now I'm loving it, and as a TV broadcast Engineer for thirty-plus years, I know a good picture when I see one.
I also am a TV broadcast Chief engineer, and Sony far outweighs the Vizio
the founder of VIZIO was a huge player in the computer game in Silicon Valley........ no wonder the TV is good.... and it can be found at a great price at Costco !

I bought a real cheap 32 inch LCD tv from niko off buy.com. And Ive been very impressed, so far going 6 months with no problem. Standard TV looks good, the HD looks INCREDIBLE -- My buddy has a 50 inch Sony Bravia and he said my pic looks just as good as his, only much smaller lol. Still waiting for a good deal on a 42 inch +. Niko only goes up to 37.

I did a lot of research before I bought my 47" LCD GV47L Vizio from Costco. First off, it is the narrrowest 47" (screen size) I could find, as I was limited to a 45" cabinet width, this one fits with 1/2" to spare at 44.5" width. The picture is exceptional, and this is with a 1080i HD cable signal,I am anxious to see a full 1080p picture displayed when I get an HD DVD player. Plenty of input/outputs, beautiful styling, great manual, nice backlit remote, and did I mention GREAT PICTURE! The only issue I am trying to sort out is that I want to show digital photos from my laptop on it through the RGB input, and my HP laptop defaults to a resolution of 1600 x 900 when Vizio states in the manual to set it fior 1360 x 768, which is not offered in my HP widescreen monitor. Any suggestions on a fix for this?
I think they may have a misprint. I have not heard of 1360 x 768, and it is not a natural multiple of anything else. I would suggest using the 1280x768, which is a good aspect ratio and they should not have to upsample.
Vizio LCD 47" GV47L TV RGB input challenge
No, it is not a misprint. I just got off the phone with Vizio tech support. They are telling me I must have a video driver output that has a ratio equal to 1.77, that is 1360/768=1.77 in order for the monitor to produce on undistorted picture. Neither of my laptops will do this, and so far I haven't found anything on the HP site to upgrade my video driver on either of my laptops.
I am quite surprised he told you this. Few drivers will produce this odd resolution and it is not listed in the MS or DirectX list for either required or expected resolution. It is unlikely you would get a driver mod that produces this.
This means that for RGB they are doing any conversion (scaling). Does your laptop produce other outputs like S-video or component? Some do. If not, you can get a converter cable which allows you to emit component from VGA. For example:
There are many others that do this. I am assuming they will accept standard 780p, so this will work, but not the highest resolution possible.
Ratio and resolution
The native resolution of that TV is 1920x1080=1.77. Anything that is input to that TV (as long as it will accept the signal) will be scaled to that resolution. The aspect of your pictures (if they are in 16:9) should not be distorted. Any input that is not native to the fixed pixel panel like an LCD or plasma will have to be scaled to that resolution and will look slightly less sharp-same thing happens with LCD computer screens if you change from the native resulution. If you display a picture that is in 4:3 aspect and stretch it to fill the screen, it will be distorted.
According to the owner's manual from Vizio, when selecting the RGB input, the best (highest)resolution offered is 1360 x 768. When my wide screen HP laptop is connected to the RGB port, I can only get one resolution to work, and that is 1600 x 900, even though I see 1920 x 1080 offered in settings, when I try to select it, it justs goes back to 1600 x 900. The tech I spoke with said that it had to do with the difference between a computer signal and a TV signal, and that there was more of a problem with the 47" set than their 46" set in this regard. He said in order to get it to work properly I would have to get a different laptop, one that could display 1360 x 768 or a resolution that divides out to 1.77
I just tried on a 1360x768 sharp aquos. the first time, it balked at me when I hit "apply" and it showed an odd resolution on the screen. I went back to reset it and found that 1360x768 was available, so I picked it and it worked. I was using an HDMI cable though, I haven't tried s-video or 15-pic PC input.
OK, last night I tried again to connect my widescreen HP laptop to my new Vizio GV47L. This time it worked!! No distortion! I swear I did everything the same, except I rebooted the PC and the TV, when I selected RGB input on the TV, the screen stated "1360 x 768 resolution" for about 5 seconds then the picure came up, and it was perfect, NO distortion. The confusing part is that on the PC, the resolution states 1600 x 900, but I don't care as long as the Vizio picture is not distorted. This is great, now I can do slide shows at family get togethers and everyone can see! I think I may have initially "confused" the RGB input on the Vizio with the output from my older standard screen laptop, and when the widescreen laptop was connected it didn't reset. Thanks for the feedback from those that offered comments, CNET folks are great!
Good news. I am not surprised as they are using one of a few chips, and they all would handle this by simple scaling. I still wonder why the tech support person gave you mis-information, but I have to say tech support has gone severely downhill from all vendors (they outsource to the same companies in many cases).
Ok...so that is a good price...on a good tv. Toshiba is really remanufacturing that Samsung product well. 1080p is really overkill right now...you will only see the true quality of it when you drop another $500 and get either an HD-DVD or BluRay player...plus the expensive disks of movies. Sorry...still NOT worth it.
