Hi, I've been looking at projectors for a while now, always on the lookout for a good one, but recently I saw one in action at Sam's Club and to tell you the truth, I was utterly disappointed. The lighting was horrid, the pciture was more grainy than the weak UHF antenna signals I get, and the price was robbery considering the quality....

I'm mostly in for the size, because those larger LCD/DLP/CRT tv's are waaaaay overpriced for my budget. I can't plop down 6,000 for a 62" TV. But the smaller sizes, in quality, are much much better than the projector: Crisp, clean screen; colors were vivid (I never knew Gandalf's beard was so white); and the overall quality blew me away. I sat there forever just looking at the screen astounded by the quality, and by the price.

When it comes down to it, Projectors offer more real estate for your dollar. Bang for your buck, you could say. Was that projector just bad; was it the enormus lighting coming from the fixtures on the ceiling that made it look bad OR are projectors just made for powerpoint presentations. I'd like to spend a Grand Total of no more than 2,200 dollars. Usage breakdown:

90% will be DVDs
5% will be Games played from the computer
5% will be regular TV channels

Does anyone have any opinion on what I should get? The projector wasn't that great, it was some Optoma company, and I think it might be budget-minded as the TV was near luxury. A simple post of TV or pojector would even help. Thanks!

SAME PROBLEM

I own a 65" sony 3 tube 3 ton rear projector and after viewing the new l.c.d. and d.l.p rear project t.v.s my old set looks terrible and Iam like you the price for a lets say a 65" rear project t.v. and a front projector like 96" is about the same I do know you have to have a totally dark room and the bulb for the front projector is rather pricy cadillacstew@aol.com

I've got a pitch-black room, surrounded by enorumus bookshelves. The extra matienence for the Projectors is pricey, some bulbs even selling for $400! Thats outrageous, the bulb is a fifth of what you paid the projector for in the first place! Thanks for your reply!

I have had the Sanyo plv z2 for over a year and have enjoyed watching dvd movies with it.

I have the projector mounted on the ceiling with a Daylite screen. size tapes out at 90" ( no monster tv hogging the room)

I did buy a spare bulb just under $300 but have not needed it yet.

My viewing is mostly dvds but had high def last year for the super bowl and daytona race, both were amazing

Cable charges to much for high def.

If you can control the light in the room this is a very good projector.

Whenever you see a bad display like that, you have to wonder what they are really trying to communicate to you. Was there a TV for sale right next to it? Was the same signal supplied to both? What cables did they use? Who set it up & what was the brightness/contrast/color balanaces set at? etc...

You can get an awesome 720p native resolution HD projector for much cheaper than a TV. The major decision you have to make when deciding between the two is... do I want a larger screen that is slightly more susceptible to getting dulled by ambient light or do I want a teeny tiny screen that is less susceptible to getting dulled, but it is more likely to reflect light sources back at me? (ie, the window or lamp behind you that you see in reflection).

The BIG draw back to front projection HAS been and WILL ALLWISE be, Ambient room light!!!!! It must be contolable or it will washout the picture.
A 1200 ANSI lumin unit needs a VERY dark room to look good. 1900 ANSI is much better!! I currently work with 4500 and 5200 ANSI units but they cost $5000 to 10,000.
Not in the price range of most HT use.
Go back to SAM's and look st Samsung 47" CRT-RP it costs $999.77 and will do 1080i native. John

Home Theater is the key here or is is living room TV.

What commercial theater have you been in with ambient light?

TV's also come with a mediocre sound system.

I have a home theater and am very happy with and the projector.

But to each his own.

None,,, I for one would have a problem with a front projection TV in my living room, since the west wall has 4 big windows. Controling ambient light is rather difficult.
TV's also come with a mediocre sound system. Ture most do. But that is what the HT reciver is all about.
The CRT RP TV came to rule the HT for a good reason.
If you have a good room for a front projector,, GREAT!!!
But most people don't. John

I have had lots of experience with several projectors currently on the market. To be completely forthright, I would prefer to watch a forward projected system with little or no ambient light around. However, even a projector that puts out only 1000 lumens can still withstand a decently lit room. I had the super bowl party at my house last year & got nothing but comments. If you know you will be watching this system all day long when normal people are usually at work, then get one with lots of lumens & get good curtains. I put mine in my basement (which unfortunately is lit by these ******* power saving flood light type bulbs) & it works well. happy
