DirecTV reception during bad weather??

Please forgive if this has been discussed, but I've not seen it during searching.
I've been considering trying one of the Satellite TV systems and I see there are about an equal amount of supporters on each side, DirecTV and Dish Network. I'm leaning towards trying DirecTV but I have one concern and I hope ya'll can give me some of your experiences.
My biggest concern is how often does it lose the signal during bad weather and is it very long? I've heard mixed reports. Some say that weather WILL impact your picture and lose the signal, some say occasionally, but not very long at all when it happen, and some say hardly ever, never more than it does with Cable. I went to Best Buy last night to see the systems and the sales guy there said that when teh weather gets really, REALLY nasty like it can do down here (I live in southern Louisiana), then you'll lose it. I live in a 2nd story apartment with a totally unobstructed view of the southern sky, so things like trees, etc, shouldn't be an issue for me.
I currently have digital cable from Cox and overall I'm satisified, but comparing prices, it seems like I can pay about the same thing but get more with DirecTV. However I don't want to have to worry about getting TV or not getting it, ya know?
Sorry for being so long, but I'd really appreciate any feedback ya'll can give me. Thanks!
