Sony Walkman NWZ-E585 MP3 player not fully seen by Windows

I have today bought a Sony Walkman 16Gb NWZ-E585 MP3 player. I connected it to my Dell PC (running Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 3, which the Sony Quick Start Guide confirms is a supported OS). I saw the message "Found New Hardware WALKMAN" above the System Tray, quickly followed by the message "Found New Hardware MTP Device". Charging appeared normal and after only about 2 hours the battery symbol showed full. During the time it is connected, it shows "Connected USB (MTP). The player cannot be operated."
The device is listed under "Windows Portable Devices" in Device Manager. It is also visible as a destination called "WALKMAN" in the dropdown in the right hand pane in the "Copy to CD or Device" window in Windows Media Player, Version 9 and I can indeed copy music to it that way. However, it steadfastly refuses to show as a Removable Disk in My Computer.
I have tried uninstalling it from Device Manager, then booting (from cold) with the player connected and then without it connected. I have uninstalled all the Creative and Zen software associated with my previous MP3 player. I have left the player connected for hours to see if it would "wake up". But still the device refuses to appear in My Computer. As such, I can't install the Walkman software or access the manual, both of which are on the device!
Can anyone please suggest how to get it fully recognised by Windows?
