Absolute ignoramus! Seeking advice on portable music.

I listen to music and books when I am driving or doing chores. Can't stand any radio station for more than 7 minutes, so prefer books or CDs. Car CD players always screw up, likewise cassette players.
What I really want, same as everyone, is to LISTEN and be entertained or distracted from work; seems I spend a lot of time trying to get stuff to work.
Also, as baseline info, I am a singer; used to learn songs in the car, listening to cassettes on one of those 4-pound SONY players. The old VW was noisy, so I drove around with the thing held up to my right ear. Learned by listening to a verse, stopping the player, trying to recite the verse. W/cassette player, it was easy to rewind and listen to a verse over.
Now, the new technology, MP3s.....
Everyone and his great-nephew can record, download, make playlists, go jogging, jack into the car audio system. I get nowhere with this!
Furthermore, earbuds fall out of my ears!
What I'd like is to be able to store a bunch of songs and the book I'm reading. FIND any of them. Play back as I've described above in the car. Carry with during chores or walking/jogging. Be able to bookmark, rewind, fast-forward, PAUSE instantly and easily when my wife asks me a question or the dogs start carrying on, copy into different stored playlists and call those up. Plug into car dash player or anything else.
Somebody want to play guru for me?
