MP3 players forum: New multimedia player

The Playbook is a solid device. I love the OS UI. It is far superior to the latest and greatest of Android. However, the app store is pathetic compared to Google Play. It's hard to find apps. And some key apps are missing. But just for generic email, media consumption, Internet, etc I usually pick up my Playbook and pick up my Android tablet when I need a specific app. I love the sound quality of the PlayBook. But there is no EQ to speak of. There is an awesome hardware EQ in the Playbook but there is nothing in the API to access it. Yet. I just shot a video with the Playbook and it turned out really nice. The music player is decent. I think it handled video much better than Android devices. I suggest picking up the 64GB for $300 so have tons of space for media. The 2.0 update fixed a lot of issues with the tablet. I really like it.

Android has tons of good music apps. Few of them are on the Playbook. I've never been impressed with the Android default EQ, but there are apps like PowerAmp that implemented a killer 10 band EQ.

My problem with Android is finding a small player that isn't stuck on Gingerbread forever with a single core CPU. The phones have killer hardware. Not so much with the PMP. You might also want to consider holding out for the Nexus tablet. That will be a 7" tablet with hopefully killer hardware and a high resolution screen running ICS for a reasonable price. I just bought the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. The screen is cheap TFT so viewing angle is not great, but the loudness of the speakers is insane and it's running ICS. It's another option.

If money was no option I would buy the Galaxy Tab 7.7. It has an AMOLED display that is gorgeous. Blows everything else away. But it's a really expensive tablet.

So there are some of my thoughts. Personally, I have Cowon J3 as my main music consumption device. But it the last of the great pure media devices and has amazing battery life and sound.
