MPS sound level question

I've been ripping music from CD to convert to MPS and then burn on CD (data disk). I've been using Windows Media Player and when listing to the music the volume varies vastly from song to song. Is there any better software out there that can normalize the volume of each song?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=windows+media+player+normalization finds the setting in WMP as well as plugins and why you may want to try other rippers.
