Thanks; how easy is it to find a receiving device for video for the car? And at that point I guess the price is basically the same as the 705?

Is the screen on the 605 really ok for watching hours of video at one time?

I guess the real issue is this and is probably personal preference:

Given that the 4" screen is so portable, is it really any good to watch?
Given that the 7" screen is so watchable, is it really portable?

And finally, I took a look and was confused how I might use the 4" in a car; I guess I buy a monitor of some sort, but I don't see many out there. Is there an actual dock with a screen that someone builds for the unit?

The 704 review is not very good. Is there a 705 review coming soon? Should we expect the 705 to be improved? I assume it will perform much more like the 605 than the 704.

There should be a review when it comes out, but what improvements are you really looking for in the 705?

don't just look at the numbers, the 604, 704wifi, and 605wifi reviews were all done by different people so they're number rating might disagree but there isn't much to compain about the 704

also you should note, aside from the size, the 605 and 705 screens should have the same specs (WVGA 24-bit touchscreen)

if you only want 30GB you can get the 605WiFi 30GB for $240 with a MySpace account by Nov 20

the 705Wifi will come in a minimum 80GB

and if you don't want WiFi you'd have to go way back to the 604/505. You can find some new and refurb for a decent price, But without the WiFi you also loose the Touchscreen and High-res display

The 605 is great for watching hours of videos. I really think the 705 is a bit much. I have used the 704 (they are about the same size) and it really doesn't fit into your pocket like the 605 can. The 705 is a great system for long trips.

You cannot change the battery on the 605 and so you are forced to purchase multiple battery docking adapters and take all of those with you if you are taking a long trip (and you have no means of recharging). The plus is that the battery dock is as long as my pinky finger and as wide as maybe 3 fingers, so its pretty small.

The 705 does have a removable battery (like the 704 and 604) and this piece of basically the entire back of the 705. So an extra battery would be both heavy and large to travel with.


Gen 5 still has some noticeable flaws.

Backwards support for languages. Get this, if I import chinese named songs (and my archos language is set to English) it says ??????? but if I change the archos language to Chinese.. the song name appears correctly.. rotfl

Hey thats still better than Creative ROTFL. If I plug in my Creative Zen and drag files via Windows Explorer the chinese shows up perfectly in the player, but if I use the Creative Media Browser it shows ????? HAHAHAH

Oh and btw, iPod is trash and whoever designed iTunes needs to be shot. Worst pile of crap ever.

Archos 605wifi 160GB / Shure 530PTH

has anyone tried to read a pdf document on a 605? That's one of the reasons why I was thinking of going with the 705, the bigger screen.

my vision is ok. I have a Palm LifeDrive, which has something by 400, pretty sharp too, but a little small, and I don't like the way the software offers up pdfs.

I wish I could see the Archos live before buying, but unfortunately haven't seen the 605 in any stores near me. Am I right that the 705 is scheduled for release sometime this week?

well I've seen them on display at J&R and Circuit City
the 705 is supposed to be out on the 16th

the LifeDrive is HVGA (320x480) 3.9"
the 605 has .4" larger screen but more important more than twice as many pixels

also, R. Proffit, about the side scrolling, whether WVGA is enough to prevent side scrolling is based on the PDF itself, but going from the 605 to 705 shouldn't make the difference since they have the same resolution and software. Now I suppose you mean neither are good enough but there's really isn't anything better until we look at those more expensive UMPCs that have a 1024x600 res.
