Apple grabbed you by the b@lls.......
You are thinking just how Apple would want you to.
Just like I talked about to a fellow Buzz Out Loud listener, Apple wants you to get the equally priced 30GB iPod (or 80GB) because.....
1- With 30GB and a larger screen, you will be more inclined to purchase music videos, T.V. shows, and eventually, full length movies on iTunes. Not to mention even more music, since you have a vast amount of storage to hold all your newly acquired media.
All of that means better profit for Apple. With the slowing sales of iPods, Apple desperately needs to get a new profit machine working. I know, the situation isn't as dire as I make it out to seem, yet. But, once Zune revitalizes the WMA based competitors, Apple will need to go on the defensive, and fast.
2- Apple hopes to transition you into a new kind of buyer. Typically, most iPod purchases are the Nano. Prior to that, the Mini. These attracted the mainstream buyers. The Nano and Mini generate decent profit. Full fledged iPods however bring in far more profit, but haven't been nearly as successful as their mainstream counterparts. With the new lower priced iPods, Apple hopes to get you hooked, while making more profit from device sales. In the future, when new iPods are released yet again, you will need THOSE for their higher storage capacities because of all the media you purchased. Once that happens, you are hooked and they've got you by the...gumballs.
Apple is an brilliant company ran by an equally brilliant tactician. Steve Jobs wants you to overlook the Nano and Shuffle and go straight for the new iPods. He may come off as everyones friend and a god to the Mac Faithful, but at the end of the day, he is the CHAIRMAN for Apple Computer. And that job, requires him to bring home the bacon first and foremost.
One quick note which should help bring into alignment, the future plans (or hopes) of Apple. You know the increasingly circulating rumors about the higher quality songs on the iTunes Music Store? Sure, Jobs wants to keep the labels happy with more money. But, umm, better quality means a bigger file..bigger files mean, you need a player with a larger HD........
Get used to that trend, Apple wants to keep the gravy train rolling....
