Camcorders forum: JVC GR-D90 Camcorder Lens Cap Problem

From what I've seen, not something those at home can fix.

If your camcorder is still under warranty, send it before it's to late. There is some kind of wide spread problem with the CCD Assembly on this line of JVC products. In particular with the GR-DxxU line.

From what I have read in the internet, the CCD Assembly is a Sony part and can be purchased for about $50. If you are handy with electronics, you could give it a go. This repair if successful, will probably not last for to long either.

I have the same problem with this camera and it's a shame that JVC is not doing anything about it. I read somewhere that there is a pending class action law suit against JVC on this line of products.

Sony has also released a statement with one of their camcorders, that they will fix the problem at no charge. Can't remember the link but it's on this site.

-I can't believe this lens crap problem is everywhere. It's killing me to drop $300 + bucks one year and this JVC product needs to be replaced the next year. With three kids I am not happy to buy a new camera. I have the same thing , lens cap warning is completely wrong, no cap on. I'm pretty efficient w/electronics and I can't get anything to solve this problem. Where has anyone been able to get this problem repaired for an amount less than a new camera cost? Help, my kids are getting older!

the problem is with the camera ccd. i have replaced mine and its been working perfectly eversince.

According to some posts on the net regarding using TDK or other 3rd party DV tapes, it may be linked to lens-cap dislpay messages poping up.

From what I read, you'll have to:

1. Take the tape out.
2. Get a JVC tape
3. Take the battery out.
4. Leave unplugged for a long time ( 1 day or more)
5. put battery in
6. load JVC tape.

I cannot confirm this, so all you can do is try this.
The worst it can be is that it'll cost you the tape or
it'll start working all together and you are happy again.

Hi, i just wanted to thanks the previous people for bringing this subject to light, especially with the link to jvc.com

I am in canada and have the gr-d74u camera and have the distorted image problem and the occasional lens cap error message.

I contacted the JVC canada technical service number and spoke to 2 separate people who both said JVC canada and USA are different so they will not cover the repair. I am out of my warranty and the repair place wanted $312 CAN for the repair.
I argued and argued and they said no, I said i wanted to talk to the person in charge there and the lady told me she was the supervisor, i said how nice for u, but i dont think u are what i mean, i need someone who is in charge.
She put me through to a service manager who immediately said this was a known issue and of course they will cover it, he then phoned the service place i took it to and authorized them to repair it.

So if anyone in Canada needs this same thing done, dont waste time with the tech people who answer the phone, all they know how to do is refer you to a service center who will charge you for the repair.

i too have just got off the phone with one of those "tech support monkeys" and he would not authorize the repair. i can't seem to find a link for your email but could you email me the contact information of the person "in charge" that can authorize the repairs?

Just got off the phone with one of the JVC tech representatives. He acknowledged the problem and that my model GRD 30 U is eligible for free repair. He also gave me the contact for the service location in my area (Mississauga).

Guess What! When I called the service centre they refused to know anything about it and said the repairs are not free. When I quoted the information from JVC tech rep, they said that the tech rep has made an error and that JVC has no such claimer for free repair. Can't beleive I trusted these Monkeys. Never ever buying a JVC camera. To be honest, not buying anything from a company that has anything to do with JVC.

You will have to pay quite a hefty charge to get the lens cap problem repaired as you are NOT the original owner. I would therefor advise you to contact the person that sold it to you as he/she can get it repaired for FREE, that is of course provided he/she actually was the original purchaser and not just having bought it second hand his/her self, found it was faulty, and decided to unload it.

To anyone else reading this JVC Canada DOES offer the free repair on this fault but its not near so easy to obtain it as it is in the US due to JVC Canada having a policy of less than an open admission that the problem exists.
