Start recording disc error - please help?

I have a Hitachi dvdcam uses mini disc, of which i just purchased, sony dvd-r 2.8gb when putting them into the camcorder - and I start to record after about 20 seconds it tells me disc error. Then brings me to screen that asks me to reset/restart and once doing, and starts again tells me to repare which i try - it then after about a min. tells me disc error, and goes to normal screen.....I also have tried this with several different brand new disc's and all of them do the same thing.
I can still watch other disc's that have been recorded and such with no problems. Hope someone can help me - really would like to fix this issue before x-mas.

As the drive ages the laser dims and it won't record. You can try cleaning the recording lens (I'm leaving out how on purpose here, see manual or maker) but it's a common issue with optical recorders.

I would have written to use the same media make and type as before but I read you tried that.
