I just got a Sony PJ760V. I can set the image quality for 1920X1080 60p or 60i.
Further, there are two options for 24p recording. One is AVCHD 24M. The other is AVCHD 17M.
I think I understand that the 24p is film quality. I can mess with those and try to see the effect. But how to decide which from the above? 60p or 60i?
I'm using a 4-5 year old iMac running OSX 10.6.8. Editing in iMovie. Importing directly onto the iMac and backing up on a 1TB external drive.
A related concern is that throughout Sony's manual there are several warnings about using AVCHD formatted recordings on DVDs. Even though I'll be viewing the result on my iMac and on a DVD on my BluRay player. But if I share a movie I need to put it on a DVD (no BluRay burner). These warnings have me concerned. Is AVCHD going to be a problem for me?

AVCHD on DVD is not a problem for me. It appears to be a problem for those that don't have a PC or a BD player.

by "film quality" I meant more of film characteristic than film goodness.
I did successfully burn onto a dvd and played it on my bluray player just fine. I lost some of the HD-ness, though. I need to look into this further. Would burning onto HD DVD-R help? Or does HD get lost somewhere else in the process like, say, the DVD burning drive itself?
I have to go with no.

Since there is nothing touching the AVCHD file from beginning to end, there is no loss.
