Need a new camcorder.

I'd like to get a new camcorder. One with fast autofocus and maybe manual aperture control. Every time I do a close up with my Sony Bloggie, the background gets EXTREMELY overexposed/washed out. Especially if it's white.

What would be an upgrade for $500 or less?

At 500 you are nearly into DSLR territory.

I picked up the T3i and it's really great. The t3 is under your budget but the t3i features were enough for me to go up a notch. Which feature pushed me over? The automatic sensor cleaner.

It actually is doing very well at this.

In this price range it's a tough area since you are in the not good enough camcorder area but for this DSLR it may hit the right spots.
