Is there any good movie maker software for avchd?

I recently bought a Sony Handycam with lots of nice features, but since everything is in AVCHD format, no thumbnails show up on my pc, and windows movie maker does not support AVCHD. I have tried converting to a compatible format, but seem to lose quality. The conversion is of lower quality than my old digital camera's video, which I believe was in avi format. I just want to be able to produce WMM style videos, nothing commercial. I would like to purchase a quality movie maker software that I can use, or find a good camcorder that does not record in AVCHD. Any ideas?
Also, what is the benefit to AVCHD? I've read about HD quality, more compressed, etc.., but if you can only view it on a pc, and have to use the proprietary software that came with the camcorder(to preview thumbnails), and are not able to do anything with the video, I don't see the benefit...maybe I'm just not understanding it though?
