Panasonic NV-GS11 - Unable to download miniDV to Win 7

There I was, blissfully downloading my miniDV cassettes to Win XP for years via firewire, when all of a sudden after upgrading my OS to Windows 7 I am unable to perform this task anymore. The software that came with the camera is only compatible with Win XP [DV STUDIO 3.1E-SE] and after contacting Panasonic directly they offered me updates for MotionDV STUDIO 5.6E [bless 'em] which of course is of absolutely no use to me as I don't possess the 5.6E!
I have trawled the web looking for a copy of MotionDV STUDIO 5.6E so that I could purchase it and then upgrade it but alas - nothing found. So now I have miniDV cassettes filled with family moments that are not going anywhere. Anyone have any similar experiences or solutions?

Installing the OS is one thing. How did you find and install the drivers? Not much has changed in a decade. That is, we hunt down drivers and install them manually.

Which drivers are you referring to Bob? My understanding is that Win 7 transfers all neccessary programs/drivers across when I migrated from Vista to 7. My firewire driver is the most up to date as well, however when I plug my camcorder into the PC I get the following message "Import video card could not find a compatible video device, verify that the digital video device is properly connected & turned on" Well the camcorder is switched on, and the cable connected, so short of taking my clothes off to "turn it on" I'm stumped =)
Perhaps I should just take the cassettes to a company that converts miniDV to DVD and take a hit on this one.

After what must be some thousand installs I still go find motherboard chipset drivers and the rest.

The maker of the PC should have drivers (unless they don't support 7.)

I re-read your posts and can't find the make, model of the PC. Sorry but if I missed it, I apologize. It may be a while till I check in so hopefully someone will go looking for you.

"Drivers for the computer hardware

There is no guarantee that Windows 7 built-in set of drivers will include your specific hardware. Therefore, please make sure you have the right drivers available before you start the installation. The drivers usually come on CD/DVDs supplied by the manufacturer with newly purchased hardware. Alternatively, you may also download them from official vendor websites.

Having the drivers available will make sure that after you have installed Windows 7, your system will perform to its fullest. If you meet the above three requirements, we are ready to go. "

Well, I must thank Bob for pointing me in the direction of the drivers, I have found that my firewire "updated" driver was actually the problem! By reverting to the "legacy" firewire driver my PC instantly began downloading video again, WOOHOO! Happy days!

Parting Tip.

Don't use Microsoft's Driver Update. While it has worked for some, I only see the failures.
