Importing Mini-DV; iMovie or FCX?

I have about 100 mini-dv tapes shot with the Sony VX2000. I don't have this camera anymore, so I just bought a Sony TRV-17 to play them back on and import into my 2011 Mac Mini. However, iMovie 11 keeps crashing while importing (I have 8GB ram). I am wondering if I am doing something wrong or if the solution is a more robust software program such as FCX? I am using firewire 800 from 4 pin (camcorder) directly to Mac Mini (FW800). Works just fine for about 20-30 seconds, then crashes. I just want to archive the video right now, will edit later so am looking for uncompressed (.avi or .mov?) to store them.
Suggestions?

1. Canned air on vents and heatsinks.
2. Stock RAM (painful but a test.)

thing I do with "crashing apps" on a Mac is to run the *current* version or Disc Utilities (in the Applications: Utilities subdirectory). Repair Permissions. It is possible you may need to run it 2-3 times so it runs and finds no issues... Then import and tell us how it goes... Of course, this assumes there is adequate free hard drive space to hold the video being imported. 60 minutes of standard definition video will consume about 14 gig of computer hard drive space when imported...

The "Archive" is the Digital tape, so there is no need to import immediately...
