Panasonic HDC HS700k camcorder lighting help with concerts

I have the Panasonic camcorder listed above. This thing shoots outstanding video given there is proper light...like most consumer camcorders. I know Panasonic is even known for having good low light video. However, i shot a band at a bar and there was no real lighting as it was just a small college bar and the footage is grainy. Should i have filmed without Intelligent AUTO on and done everything in manual? I do not have any lights myself(yet) and i dont have one on the camcorder either. What is my best scenerio for interior low lit scenes like this, given I am still using the above camcorder for now until I get a prosumer model...Set up some sort of lights around the stage OR should I get a LED light for my camcorder? I have been seriously thinking about the latter. Will that help and not make people look like deers in the headlights? Is that considered standard to have lighting on a camera for shooting concerts?
