How to compare camcorders for specific use?

I need to buy a camcorder (a UK model, but they're not that different).
Budget: max 300
1. Skiing (to record general vacation footage and to record individuals for technique review with instructor, so reasonable optical zoom necessary with stabilisation & also small size is crucial).
2. Indoor recording of interviews conducted in British sign language under normal domestic or office lighting, occasionally under better lighting.
I will want to:
a. edit (cut/join add text etc) on a Windows PC (reasonable but not top spec)
b. create standalone DVDs easily
c. upload to youtube
I do not have an HD television, nor any prospect of getting one. I know HD is better than SD, BUT I'd rather get a higher end SD than a bottom end HD and I think I'll find editing HD files might be too much for my PC.
b. Storage - for ease I think hard drive would be good, probably with SD/Memory stick to add flexibility.
SO... what would you buy if you were me and why? I wish I could go to a store and try some out, but that seems impossible. Nearly all the small retailers have cut down on their stock as they can't compete with online sellers and the big chains like Comet really aren't interested in demoing - they just said "sorry, we don't have charged batteries or convenient mains sockets"!
