MiniDV to Computer

I recently captured some video and I would like to put it on my labtop to do some general editing. I have a Panasonic PV-gs85. What cord should I use? What is some good general editing software?

Use Firewire...

Make sure your computer has a Firewire port. (It is not USB.) If you don't have one, they can be bought pretty cheap. Check the forum sticky note. As for editing software, Windows Movie maker is fine for some trimming and effects and it integrates well with Vista's DVD burning program. (You never told details of the computer you have.) If XP, there are many other options. I'd stick with the usual Vegas Studio, Premiere Elements, Video Studio, etc.

Whizkid's got you covered on the Windows side - other than there are some budget laptops that do not allow any expansion - but we don't know what you have.

In the Apple Macintosh environment, ALL laptops made in the last 10 years or so come standard with a firewire 400 port. (The only exception is the new MacBook Air - no firewire...) iMovie or iMovieHD have been bundled with MacOSX for many years, too.

In any case, another potential hurdle will likely be hard drive space. Standard definition - DV - uses about 14 gig of hard drive space per hour of imported video. An external hard drive may be needed, too.
