Need help with camcorder choice, AVCHD or mini dv?

I want to buy a camcorder but am unsure what to buy like a lot of people i guess.
The issue i have is i would like to buy in the US as i am going on holiday to the US soon and the cost of almost all camcorders i have looked at is considerably lower in the US than in my country Ireland.
Ireland is a PAL country and i realise this will mean i will have to buy a PAL version of any mini-dv camcorder i buy.
But what does this mean to me if i go for a AVCHD format, i realise that the editing capability is not where it should be for me at the moment as i am a novice to the camcorder game and as for editing, well never.
Since i would like to future proof my choice somewhat, I currently have the Canon HG10 top of my list but from reading some reviews it seems that the software supplied by Canon for getting your footage from the camcorder is not very user friendly.
any help or information appreciated.

You really should buy PAL

and you really should buy miniDV... especially for editing... and especially for best available quality...

If you look around this forum (use the search function), you will get lots of hits as to why for both items.

Chances are high that you will not find PAL cameras in the US... because we are NTSC and there is little demand for them.

May I suggest you look at the HV20 as the alternate to the camcorder you are looking at - or wait for the feedback on the newly announced HV30.

Be advised that a firewire400 port will be required on yuor computer if you go the miniDV route so we should know your computer environment to make a really appropriate set of recommendations...

is it the fact that the editing options for AVCHD at the moment are limited?
do you know about AVCHD bought in the US, will there be any problems with this in a PAL country?

DV and HDV format video captured on miniDV tape continues to provide the best available video quality (because they compress a lot less than AVCHD).

You asked if there might be issues with NTSC camcorders in a PAL country. My answer stays the same... Yes.

Is the issue i would run into the fact that NTSC operates on 60hertz and PAL operates on 50hertz, or am i totally off?
